CranioSacral Therapy

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a light-touch approach that releases restrictions deep in the body. Few body structures have more influence over our health and well-being than the central nervous system. And few body systems have more impact on our central nervous system than the craniosacral system -- the membranes, soft tissues, and fluid that protects the brain and spinal cord. The craniosacral system extends from the skull or the cranium down to the tailbone or sacrum.

The Importance of CranioSacral Therapy

CranioSacral therapy is a gentle yet powerful form of holistic healing. Its real importance is not just in the release of deep restrictions but in its effectiveness in allowing the body to self-correct. CST is growing in influence as an effective treatment for physical trauma and for emotional, mental, and spiritual problems. Treatment on the physical level becomes the doorway to healing and transformation on all levels --body, mind and spirit.

How Does CST Work?

Tapping into the wave-like rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid, the therapist locates blockages that often have their source in long-held painful emotions and experiences. The therapist uses a gentle touch--starting with about the weight of a nickel--and then continues with distinctive light-touch techniques to release any restrictions. By freeing the central nervous system to perform at its best, CranioSacral Therapy naturally eliminates pain and stress, strengthens resistance to disease, and enhances health and well-being. Because it is so gentle, CranioSacral Therapy can be effective for all ages, from newborns to the elderly.

CST helps resolve pain, illness and a wide spectrum of physical and mental health concerns, including: migraines and headaches, stress and tension-related disorders, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, emotional difficulties, pregnancy-related conditions, chronic neck, back and joint pain, post-surgical problems and more.

CranioSacral Therapy for the Elderly

CST helps older adults to manage pain, facilitate rehabilitation, and reduce agitation and hypertension.  Reduced reliance on certain medications is often the result. Whatever the particular ailment, studies on the impact of CST on older adults show improvements in sleep patterns, stress tolerance, focus, energy, appetite and a general sense of well-being.

What Can I Expect From a Session?

A typical CST session takes place in our quiet and private therapy room. You relax on a comfortable, padded table, much like you would for a massage session. A CST session generally lasts about an hour. The therapist may use CST alone or may integrate it with other therapies to create powerful effects. You can discuss the various options with the therapist before the session.

What you experience from your own session is highly individual. The sessions are generally deeply relaxing, creating feelings of warmth or gentle pulsing in the areas the therapist works on.

How many sessions will I need?

As with other bodywork techniques, most clients will start noticing an improvement in their condition after a few sessions. One or two sessions may be helpful (or more), depending on individual needs and choices. How will I know if I am "improving?" You will feel less pain and tension in the body area that has been causing you trouble. You may find that you feel less anxious and more open to discussing issues that previously were too emotionally painful. You may begin to see the connection between your body and your mental and spiritual state. New levels of self awareness and focus may begin to unfold.
